FreeBSD Labeled Filesystems

http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/docs/html/labels.html

What Are Labels?

FreeBSD device names are often dynamic. The same hard drive can show up
as /dev/ad0 or /dev/ad4 or even /dev/da0, depending on several
factors. Using these device names in /etc/fstab is prone to breakage.
Put the drive on another connector, in another system, or in an external
enclosure, and FreeBSD can’t boot because it can’t find the device
listed in fstab.

Labels can be assigned to FreeBSD filesystems or devices, and will
remain the same, regardless of the connection type or port. These
labels can be used reliably in fstab.

Boot Single-User And Label Filesystems

This example assigns labels to a drive that was /dev/ad4 with FreeBSD
on the first slice in a standard layout. Using part of the hostname or
other identifying information in the label helps avoid the confusion of
multiple drives with identical labels. The example computer is called
aardvark, so the labels all start with aa.

# glabel label aaswap /dev/ad4s1b
# tunefs -L aarootfs /dev/ad4s1a
# tunefs -L aavarfs /dev/ad4s1d
# tunefs -L aatmpfs /dev/ad4s1e
# tunefs -L aausrfs /dev/ad4s1f

glabel(8) is used to label swap, which is just a FreeBSD partition
without a filesystem. The label will appear in /dev/label when the
drive is detected.

tunefs(8) is used to label UFS filesystems, and those labels will
appear in /dev/ufs. tunefs will only label an unmounted or
read-only filesystem, hence the boot into single-user mode. (Labeling a
read-only filesystem seems weird until you realize that the label isn’t
part of the filesystem.)

Don’t be in a hurry. If you immediately mount / so you can
edit /etc/fstab, the new label on / will go away. Reboot first, or
disconnect and reconnect an external device.

Boot

# ls /dev/label /dev/ufs
/dev/label:
aaswap

/dev/ufs:
aarootfs aatmpfs aausrfs aavarfs

Edit /etc/fstab to use the labels you created in the previous step.

# Device Mountpoint FStype Options Dump Pass#
/dev/label/aaswap none swap sw 0 0
/dev/ufs/aarootfs / ufs rw 1 1
/dev/ufs/aatmpfs /tmp ufs rw 2 2
/dev/ufs/aausrfs /usr ufs rw 2 2
/dev/ufs/aavarfs /var ufs rw 2 2

Reboot to make sure that everything is correct and the system comes up.

Done!

That’s it. The unchanging labels let FreeBSD find the swap partition
and filesystems without caring about the device name or number.

Moving A FreeBSD System To AHCI

Make a full backup first. Unless everything goes exactly
right—and maybe even then—you can find yourself locked out without an
easy way to fix things. A fixit LiveCD is handy to have available, or
another FreeBSD system.

Does The Motherboard Controller Support AHCI?

If AHCI support is present, enable it in the BIOS. If your BIOS or
chipset doesn’t do AHCI, you might as well stop reading now.

Label Filesystems

Labeling your filesystems will eliminate
the dependence on dynamic device names and make switching to AHCI much
easier. See
FreeBSD
Labeled Filesystems
.

Modify /boot/loader.conf

ahci_load="YES"

Alternately, add device ahci to the kernel config and rebuild the
kernel.

Either way, your disks that were ad devices will now show as ada
devices. ad0 becomes ada0, and so on. If you use filesystem
labels as advised above, you don’t have to care.

Optional: Modify /etc/sysctl.conf

Increase vfs.read_max for better performance.

vfs.read_max=32

Some people have reported higher speeds with values of 64 or 128. It
depends on your hardware, and benchmarking is really the only way to
tell.

Done!

That’s it. The ACHI driver usually provides a performance increase in
addition to more modern features than the old ATA drivers.

Cute Cregslist post

It’s not like I don’t enjoy dating and meeting new people but I am looking for something specific and think I might find it in Toronto.

A date, with someone who is fun, funny, relaxed, etc. Asian. (Do I have to say Asian? Please White Men, do not reply. I know I put myself at risk by posting that I am an Asian female but I don’t want to sound like a creeper for all the Asian males that may reply… I know I am #11 on stuff white people like, but I’m just not interested, ok?! Respect.)

I know this ad says Asian but POCs are also (more than) welcome to reply. If you take that plunge, know that I am not looking for serious discussion on this particular date…

I’m looking for my sci-fi nerdy guy in the sky, artsy, musical, into entertainment, whether mainstream or other. Hilarious, but not extremely offensive. Being politically aware would be a plus. My age or older. No picky eaters! Has many interests.

As for me, I studied Economics in undergrad and am currently studying music in the States, completing an MA. I took several years off to work with a social justice organization. I will only be in town for a short period. I’m 5’6″ in case that matters.

The non-spam subject line should be…hmmm… “Buffy-eater”

Please have as much fun with your introductory email as you wish :)
